I love bagels. Real bagels from a bagel shop, not bread-in-the-shape-of-a-bagel that you find at the grocery store. I have attempted homemade bagels but it's tricky to get that chewy crust just right, not to mention time consuming. I don't plan my bagel cravings, so when the urge strikes (usually in the morning) I don't want to spend four hours kneading, proofing, boiling and baking to have bagels just in time for dinner. And to be more specific, the urge usually strikes on a weekend morning, so I am not inclined to get out of my PJs and go out into the world to make it happen. Unless we're out of coffee and I'm hitting the Starbucks drive-thru too. No, I have found another way to get my bagel on.
I have started buying fresh bagels by the dozen and storing them in the freezer.
They thaw and re-heat as fresh as the day you bought them. True story.
So obvious, right? I'm either a genius or really slow to catch on. Hardly worth a blog post, I know...
The only downside that I have found is that I have no self control and find myself eating bagels every day. I mean, come on, have you ever had a bagel sandwich?! Ham and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, fried egg and bacon... Delish! Or the usual... cream cheese and lox, toasted with butter, or maybe hummus?
Are you blown away? Have you been doing this for years? Let me know with a comment! If I haven't enlightened you, then hopefully I have at least invoked a bagel craving. You're welcome!
Yep, now you have me craving a bagel. I got a chuckle out of your comment spending 4 hours kneading, boiling and baking to have bagels just in time for dinner! It's true that these babies are time-consuming. I made them once, but that was all I needed to realize it is much easier to go to the local bagel shop and buy one (or a dozen).
ReplyDeleteI've been freezing bagels for a long time. I'll buy a dozen, eat one in the car on the way home, eat one while I bag them up, then keep one out for a snack later that day. Gee, that leaves 9 left...for about 3 days if I'm lucky. I like mine with low-fat plain ol' cream cheese. Sometimes just naked when I'm real lazy.
Yes, let's leave it to the experts, shall we :)
